The Light Bar was designed by Phillipe Starck, and is now world-famous for its minimalist contemporary design, fantastic cocktails and clever use of atmospheric lighting that creates a truly unusual space.
Available for private events but usually open to the public, this eclectic drinkerie uses light as its focal point – so much so that you can’t actually see the bar, because the architect has hidden it away out of sight. Exclusively using a table service s you’ll have a dedicated waiter/waitress for the duration of your evening, this unique venue is like something out of Andy Worhol’s futuristic imagination – with a stunning neon glowing ceiling being the central decorative feature of the room, and enormous black and white photos of models making contorted facial expressions taken by French fashion photographer Jean Baptiste Mondino.
The bar itself is on the ground floor of St Martins Lane hotel, and attracts a steady crowd of regulars as well as the eclectic mix of guests who stay in this exclusive and stylish establishment.
The venue is not an inexpensive one, and there’s a very strict ‘suited & booted’ dress code. Getting your name on the guest list is also essential, as you won’t find a line of people waiting to get in on the door. This is definitely a venue you have to plan to visit, and it’s advised that you take plenty of cash with you. The Light Bar is, after all, very high-end – and if you’re going to go celebrity spotting or brush shoulders with influential global characters, this is the place to do it. There are few better people-watching nightspots in London!
There’s also the option to hire this venue during the daytime for private functions, and there’s an airy and flexible layout to the space – which takes on a whole other character during daylight hours.
